Can the student cell be linked to the student name

Yes unhide the column Students name

Right click on the grid on choose unhide Columns.

I know how to unhide the name, but when I run a mail merge, it is not linking the correct student with the correct number

In mail merge there is no such option. But you can create a report that limits the numbers shown.

Also you can see them by the phone number tab.
